Take a well Balanced Diet2. As usual the treatment of cancer consists of Surgery, Radiation treatment and chemotherapy. The choice of treatment depends on the size, extent and the type cancer and the general health of the patient.Treatment of Laryngeal Cancer:Treatment depends on the diagnosis of the laryngeal cancer and its spread outside of the vocal box.Usually most laryngeal cancer is slow spreadingA. Radiation treatment. This is the most common treatment for small cancer of the larynx. This involves the use of radiation to attack cancer cells, stopping them from growing or multiplying.B. Chemotherapy. This involves the use of anti-cancer medication to treat the cancer. For both methods, the patient may experience side-effects such as tiredness and nausea. Radiation treatment is often used together with chemotherapy. C. SurgerySurgery is used only when the cancer cannot be treated by radiation treatment or chemotherapy because the removal of the vocal cords or larynx can cause the loss of voice. The lymph node in the neck may also be removed at the same time.If surgery is done, usually a tracheotomy or hole in the windpipe is done to allow air to enter or escape from the tubes in the lungs. Some patient may also require a feeding tube after surgery because swallowing of food is affected by the surgery. Most people will learn to swallow again so the feeding tube is temporary.Early treatment is recommended as it increases the patient’s chances of survival.Delayed action could result in the cancer spreading to other parts of the body, making it more difficult to treat.3. Keep bones and body strongBone marrow produces our bloodEat foods rich in calcium like yogurt, cheese, milk and dark green vegetables.Eat foods rich in Vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, cereal, and fortified milk.Eat food rich in Vitamins B and C such as green vegetables and fruitsZinc and other minerals are important to the body4. Get enough rest and SleepAvoid stress and tension5. Exercise and stay active. It is best to do weight-bearing exercise such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights for 2½ hours a week. One way to do this is to be active 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week.Begin slowly especially if a person has not been active.6. Do not drink more than 2 alcohol drinks a day for a man or 1 alcohol drink a day for a woman.Alcohol can affect the neurons and brain cells.7. Stop or do not begin smoking. It also interferes with blood supply and healing. Chapter 1Laryngeal CancerLaryngeal cancer occurs when the cells lining the larynx give rise to cancer cellsCancer of the larynx is not that common in a family practice. The only patient I saw in my clinic was an elderly man with loss of voice at the age of 55.Biopsy of the swelling in the larynx shows evidence of early cancer. He was treated by surgical removal of the swelling followed by radiation treatmentHappily he was very well after his treatment
